What is Pancreatitis?

​Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, a gland located behind the stomach that produces digestive enzymes and insulin. It can be acute (sudden and severe) or chronic (long-lasting).

Causes

  • Gallstones:Blocking the pancreatic duct.

  • Alcohol Abuse:Leading to pancreatic damage.

  • Trauma:Injury to the pancreas.

  • Autoimmune Conditions: Autoimmune pancreatitis.

Symptoms

  • Severe abdominal pain that radiates to the back.

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

  • Fever and rapid pulse.

  • Tender abdomen to touch.

Diagnosis

  • Blood Tests:Elevated pancreatic enzymes (amylase, lipase).

  • Imaging Tests:CT scan or MRI to visualize the pancreas.

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP):Used to examine pancreatic and bile ducts.

Treatment

  • Pain Management: Medications to relieve pain and discomfort.

  • Fluid and Nutritional Support: IV fluids and nutrition if unable to eat.

  • Treatment of Underlying Causes: Removal of gallstones, alcohol cessation, managing autoimmune conditions.
